Tick Tick Tick....

First post. I bought my first Porsche 2 mos ago. 964, C4, 89. Car came from Steve at NEA. Car is clean runs well and is everything I could want... but.

The engine has a tick that's not internal.

It's not an exhaust Leak. I did put a Fabspped Cup pipe and cat delete on, but it's not an exhaust leak.

The tick isn't always there. Doesn't happen at idle or if you rev it slowly, but if you snap the throttle it sounds metalic, but not at all RPM's.

I got under the car and used a long screw driver and listened to both heads and the crank case. Quiet at all rpms. Same with in the engine compartment, no odd sounds through the screwdriver.

I have put over 1000 miles on the car, it's fast and strong. The motor was rebuilt 30k ago and it pulls harder then my friends RSA.

But this tick is annoying.

Sometimes, if a plug wire or coil wire arcs it will tick.

it doesn't have any heat shields that tap against the exhaust?

I had a tick when I bought mine. I think it sat for awhile before I bought it. I changed the oil and after a summer of driving, the tick went away. Maybe you'll be as fortunate.

When was the last valve adjustment and who did it? It's not hard, but it ain't easy, either.

FWIW, a mechanics stethoscope really works way better than a screwdriver.

If you are lookimg for a good shop, I would suggest Blair Talbot Motors. I purchased my first Porsche about a year ago. Blair was my first stop, we went through the car together and he has been extremely helpful ever since. The shop number is 603 740 9911. You should call ahead and talk to Blair. Just give him a run down and ask for a good time to swing by.

If I was in NH I would take it in for sure. I am in Ontario Canada.

I pulled the distributor cap tonight and checked the belt, no issues. Changed the oil. Same thing.

Here's a youtube video I made.

Ah, Figured you bought it in Concord NH so couldnt be too far away. Try posting in the racing section asking for a shop recommendation.

Got a proper stethoscope and found the issue. Drivers side head exhaust side is the source of the tick. I am gonna take it to a guy locally and have him adjust them all. Thanks guys
