993 Model Year Comparison

Hi,

Any documentation out there on the detailed differences between the model years on non-turbo 993?

The OBD I vs II (95 vs 96) has been covered well, but what about suspension, engine, body design and so forth.

From what I have read, there is not much difference between the 993 model years (outside turbos).

I saw a post about suspension differences on this forum but citing external info it seems the suspension was unchanged.

Did the 96 forward have larger valves, a revised camshaft, and Varioram? If it did, do you consider these important features?

Also, when one has AWD is it switchable?

Thanks

Why yes there is...Why not try using the search function.

Yes, try search and rennlist forums. And if serious to understand that level of model details, Porsche 993 The Essential Companion is one of many books worth owning.

Different options thru the model lines (RoW, M030, RS, etc), Yes Varioram, Yes basket handle / S / Turbo / RS / RSR / GT2 / EVO / EVO 2, but basic body shell is the same. Biggest street car is hips S or non S.

Correct, not much, but a few things.

Yes more HP, important no, but more power is good in a sports car. Varioram is the key.

Not from cockpit, but removable RWD from AWD.

Advance search is your friend. Here and on Rennlist. Rennlist has far more 993 traffic. But with these types of questions, you should invest in a reference book. Also seek out you local Porsche Club, attend a meeting, bet there are members with 993s to look at in greater detail and ask questions. SmileWavy

Here's one resourse.

Porsche 993 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If you are considering buying a 993 the Essentials book mentioned above has all kinds of info that would be helpful.

One biggest things to consider is that here in Missouri at least, is that 1995 and older vehicles are state safety inspection only so the SAI issues are a non-starter. 1996 and newer with OBD-II get plugged into a computer an have readiness states and codes read for emmissions inspections.
