Rear shocks

I am new to the forum, but have owned a couple of 911's. I am trying to replace the struts and shocks on my 95 C2 with Konis. I am having trouble at the rear with a small plastic spacer between the shock tube and the bottom of the coil spring. I can't get it to fit over the shock tube when inserted in the spring..

I haven't removed the left rear shock yet and that is the orientation with the flange pointed up. I assumed the shocks have never been replaced before I got the car. Even if I turn it over I still can't fit the spring over this spacer. I'll try it the other way, thanks.

What is the inner diameter of the spring relative to the spacer? And how do the two springs compare? I'm assuming from the pic that the little flanges that stick out are the issue. If the whole thing floats inside the existing spring and the flanges only act to keep the spring stack from rubbing the shock body then I would get a rasp and take off a little material to make room for the thicker spring. If the tabs engage the spring then its a different story. Some shocks have a spacer that the spring sits on to keep it from riding up the shock as the spring moves. I would try and get it over the top of the shock and slide it down as you wind the coil over the spacer. A little soapy water usually helps with spacers and sleeves...
