Need some guidance...
Sorry if this post should be somewhere else, but I figured I'd start here.
Looking for some guidance/advice on how to price my 911. It’s a 1992 Carrera 2, manual with 126k miles. I bought it has a quick project car, thinking the little things wrong with it would be simple to resolve, but I honestly have no time so it’s just been sitting the last year. Here are the problems: 1) Some water had gotten inside it as its been sitting for a little while. Musty smell, but overall not too bad 2) Dashboard is lit up like a xmas tree (check engine, seatbelt light, airbag, etc.). It had passed inspection a year before I bought it so I don’t think this is a major issue, more likely corrosion on the connectors causing all the lights to come on (I heard this was a problem with this model). 3) Engine runs strong, but idles a bit rough (valve job? Possible just bad gas at this point). 4) Will need a new clutch as it slips a bit in third gear when pushing it (oddly not in 1st/2nd). That’s it. It runs/drives, but since its been sitting a over a year and the little things are adding up. Also, Carfax indicates it had minor accident damage to the passenger side. You cannot see any damage at all, but you can notice that it was resprayed in the quarter panel as the color match isn’t perfect (but nearly so, you can only notice in very specific lighting conditions) – overall the damage was repaired very well, and one probably wouldn’t even know it had ever been hit (I didn't until I read the Carfax). Clean title. I know this is just a quick description, but if anyone can give me an approx. price range that I should be looking for I’d appreciate it. If you think I'd be better posting this somewhere else let me know. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1375801533.jpg |
Your car would probably be worth a whole lot more if it was running properly !
To be honest,in the present state, not knowing all that is wrong with it i wouldn't pay more than 10-12 K for it but that's just me as Porsche replacement parts are expensive especially when you get into the unknown of electronics ! You probably paid more than that when you bought it last year ... Surely someone will have a more subjective opinion than me ! Cheers Phil |
If you do a nationwide search, there are maybe 2-3 92's for sale. All the benefits of a 964, but none of the detractions of a 90-91. I say it's worth a lot! All those issues can be fairly easily fixed in a weekend.

I actually only paid $12k for it last April at an estate auction - impulse buy! I was looking for a 964 for a while, then this deal came up and I couldn't resist, thinking I could sink a few weekends and $5/6k into it and have a decent 964 for $17k. Problem is I work to much and on the weekends I need to spend time with the family, so I haven't had the time or motivaiton to work on it.
To be completely honest I would settle for just making my money back ($12k), even though I know prices have risen quite a bit in the last 18 months. I don't need the money, and would probably just sink the proceeds back into another porsche with less issues (i.e. something a bit more "turn-key", maybe a Boxster S). Thanks for the help/guidance - you may see this one posted in the classified section soon! |
Was this a flood car by any chance...?
8-10,000$ is what I would figure as the value... if you hold out. I also bought a car several years ago that needed some work... several years later, and thousands of dollars later, the car is coming along... I would never do it again. Fixing issues on these cars is not for the faint of heart. You describe engine problems, transmission problems, electrical problems, and bodywork issues... Thats quite a bit to fix... Good luck! |
Definately not a flood car. Clean title (not a slavage), and nothing else on Carfax. The water inside is seeping in somewhere from rain. I have it covered so its not happening (previous owner had it in a garage per the auction house). Its just something I noticed once I got the car - likely just a plugged drain hole.
No engine problems other than rough idle - engine pulls very strong. The idle is prob just bad gas sine its been sitting. Also, Carfax said it was serviced at a local Porche dealer 6 months before I bought it, so I presume it was running fine at that time (and it had passed inspection then, so the electrical issues only came about after). No body work issues, they';ve been taken care of, and rather well. I only stated the accident as I wanted to disclose there was one a few years back since I know that impacts price, but certainly nothing to do there as the body is straight and clean, and the paint has held up real well (and the repairs were color matched real well). Tranny is absolutely fine, just some clutch slip. I only post this additional detail to try to get an accurate idea of the car is worth. I don't want to price too high and get tire kickers, but I also don't want to price overly low. I was thinking $12k, which is what I paid for the car in identical conditition (I only drove it a 100 miles or so) 18 months ago in a weaker market. Does that sound unreasonable? Again - I certainly appreciate everyone's feedback and opinions, its a big help. |
PMed you

12K is probably a fair price although your engine symptoms seem to be from plugged up air injection ports. Not a cheap fix.
