964 3.6 engine build
 

I may be simplifying this too much, but what's a good street engine setup on a 964 motor, if I were looking to make more power and spend between $5k and $10k?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Unless the engine needs a rebuild leave it alone. A 6 speed out of a 993 will wake up the car and be in your budget. If you have some $$ left over improve your suspension. If you want to spend more you could re-gear the box, look at G50-31 ratios.

Get a good condition engine and drive it until it needs a rebuild. Give you some time to get over the initial purchase of the engine which is going to be 6-8K maybe a little more depending on condition. If your doing a conversion into an earlier chassis then it might be alittle more for all the conversion parts .. harness, clutch, oil lines, etc. If your set on building a engine I would piece meal out the parts so you can get a really nice engine without having to by a core motor and end up replacing parts that are worn out of spec. 993/964 parts get expensive quick.

A stock rebuild is going to run most of your lowerend if you do the break down and assembly. If you have a shop do the break down and assembly, you will use the upper end and possibly more.

I just rebuilt mine. I ended up putting it back to factory specs and it's fast enough for me for now.

PM me and I'll give you a name of a contact at a parts place that can talk through this with you. His prices are great too. He's built many 964/993 motors. I was looking to get GT3 bearings and some other stuff, and was told not to spend the money if it will mostly be a street car.

One area that's recommended is to get aftermarket connecting rod bolts. Seeing how quickly we get to redline, I'll do this next time.

I put the motor back to factory specs and installed a new clutch, and the updated 997 throw out fork, slave cylinder and hose and bought some special tools too. All for about $4K to $6K.
