993 purchase

I have the opportunity to purchase a very clean, low mileage and original 1996 Carrera 2. I want to keep the car stock but it is sitting at factory height which isn't all that appealing. My plan would be to lower the car with M030 or M033 and Bilsteins. I'm confused about which is the regular and which is the sport setup. What would most people choose for a firmer ride that doesn't compromise the ride and comfort of the car for daily use?

I also want to spruce the interior up with a wood shifter and brake. Where can I find these? I'm sure they cost a small fortune from Porsche but does the aftermarket carry anything of comparable quality?

What color is the interior?

I have the MO30 and bilsteins. It definitely is not stock in terms of "comfort" but it is considered one step up from stock and performs very well. I have no clue what you mean with "sport setup".

Here is a good overall summary: suspensionFAQ

Good Luck with the purchase.

I was wondering the differences between the M030 and M033 and which would provide the more compliant ride. The link should answer my questions.

I suggest a thorough search on Rennlist, where the participation and support for 993's is way more active than here.

993 Forum - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Search the Rennlist archives there before posting on this subject. It's been rehashed ad infinitum.

There's also a devoted 993 enthusiast following in Vancouver, if that's where you end up with your car.

Meh - I don't like these Rennlist referrals. We'll never get traffic up here. That site may be more active on the 993, but their cost model is far inferior to the PP model. (In terms of what it does to posting and being active on the site).

Here:

This is not a pissing contest to see which site can see more traffic. This is about referring an information seeker to whomever has the better source of information.

Why anyone would take a "cost model" (whatever that is) over a more active forum with more current and relevant information is beyond me. To each his own.

All you posted is a link to the Rennlist main page. You might as well have told the original poster to go search on Google for the information.

+1 for Rennlist. I couldn't have my 993 without that forum. What you get in helpful advice (=savings) far outweigh the yearly admission.

I find the rennlist forum is great for most questions but tye pelican site is better for more specific engine related questions. Each site has their strong points, used in conjunction they are invaluable to the 964/993 owner.

Regarding cost models, the internet is not free and how much is your time or avoiding one 993 related service mistake worth to you?

For 993 content, rennlist has won the race. You can swim against the tide or go with the flow and I seem to recall rennlist is free for reading 993 forum, just posting for sale (and photos?) requires membership.

As far as suspensions and keeping it stock, it is a mixed bag. A lot has changed / improved since 1996 regarding suspensions, I guess it is a question of comfort / handling over originality.

I use both sites and have received valuable advice from bith ... Rennlist is more active but you do get good advice from both for the 993's. I had a 85 Carrera and had better luck here.

At the end of the day it is free advice and should be taken that way ... I find the help and experience from the forums to be a great first step and often the best suggestions.

As to your original post ... I have biltstein HD's with the M033 springs. The car is just above RS height and now handles considerably better than the stock setup ... but the ride is not as "civilized" as the stock. I used to use the car as a DD so the ride was more important. Now I use it for occasional DE's, romps up in to the mountains and find it pretty close to what I want ... but I may always be looking for something else.

Other popular setups would include PSS 10's, Koni fsd + M033 or M030 + Biltsteins's ... take the advice of previous posters and look at both sites ... you may also find the websites for The Jackals Racetrack, p-car garage, Rennsport (Steve Weiner), and FD Motorsports helpful. Good luck ...

The OP mentioned that he wanted to go in a different direction, so I didn't bother to mention this. I replaced my OEM shocks with Koni FSD's this summer. Much better ride with better handling (I kept original springs).
