Sticky Clutch Return - last inch ...
So, this appears common on the 993 and I have it. Sometimes. It seems to depend on the moon phase. The pedal works normally, the slave makes no noises, but upon return, sometimes it does not come up all the way, stopping about an inch or less short.
I took the wood foot rest out (gotta love them still using wood in a car - makes sense, it is a light piece!) and looked at the assembly. All looks nicely greasy and the pedal cluster does not look like an oil spray down would do anything but attract dirt. When I read online, there seem to be two approaches: 1) Clutch Hydraulics: - Bleed clutch hydraulics - Slave cylinder replacement (sometimes slave and master) 2) Clutch return lever upgrade - Use an updated part that apparently has a bushing where the earlier one didn't? Part number 993-423-519-03 (vs. the old one being 993-423-519-00) ![]() So, what should I try first? I do have good confidence in my clutch hydraulics. I think they were bled the time my transmission was rebuilt but I am not sure. There is no noise or stiffness when pressing / releasing, aside from this last inch business. How big a job is it to disassemble the clutch pedal assembly and installing the updated lever? TIA! George |

I did the lever and while the pedal cluster was out also changed the master since I didn't want it do the job twice (~$80 for the master, I think). And then bled of course.
That combination certainly worked. I believe my issue was the lever, but I'll never be sure.

How long has it been since the hydraulics have been bled? If more than a year, I'd try that first simply because it is easier than changing the lever and relatively inexpensive both in terms of time and money. If bleeding doesn't work, then you can be assured it's the lever.
Even then, a squirt of white lithium grease may eliminate the problem for a while. I've been using that method for about three years now. I keep saying I'm going to change the lever but as long as the grease works, I'll probably just drive it as is because the lever upgrade is a fiddley, time consuming job. |
