Question 964 convertible top malfunction

First of all thanks for all the help in getting my 91 964 cab to finally run flawlessly and avoid another trip to the dealership. I installed the two new bosch ignition modules and the car runs like it should finally. Also took out the blower motor, cleaned it up, and lubricated the fan, and it too now functions like it should. Now just need to recharge the AC system.

Now another issue. The convertible top will not open. The motors try and unlock the latches from the windshield, but then stops and the fault lamp comes on the dash. Any ideas on where I should start my diagnostic process?

Thanks

switch replacement

I think the issue with my 91 C2 convertible top is as simple as replacing the switch on the dash. Issue is how do I get the switch out without taking apart the dash? It is a tight fit and can not wiggle it out…

Any words of advice?

964 convertible top malfunction

I replaced my switch last fall. It was disintegrating and leaving a pile do dust on the ledge below. The main bow broke the year I got it. I think because of switch. This time I tried to put up in a downpour. Had to hold it down partial in the rain. It would not close or open. I got fairly wet.The switch fell apart and then I had an "aha" moment. Explains the strange dust. Replaced it. And Works great now. Still only use hood in emergency.

To remove it used a Std screwdriver and pry it down. It is only held I by friction/spring. It's just like the window switches. Plug only goes on one way, so no need to mark wires,

hi tewfiks, curious why you think it is the switch on the dash? Are you hearing anything unusual from the motors behind the driver or passenger seats?
thanks

switch

The reason I believe it is the switch is because when the switch is seated in place the top works intermittently, but as I pry the switch out of its place under the instruments the top becomes responsive and will open and close as it should.

The issue is that I can not fully remove the switch. It seems to get hung up on the "ledge" the switch is nestled in. I am contemplated removing one of the instrument dials above the switch and pushing it out from above rather than prying and pulling it out.

Help

Okay I finally worked the switch out, but in pulling it out the plug came apart and now I do not know which wire goes into which terminal! Please send me an image of the wires to the convertible top switch.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I did not read this post before you did that. I would warned you that the wires are short and will pull off the switch easily. I tried to also. but the switch worked properly when bench tested. Found it was probably the top control unit under the dash about in the same area. That is really difficult to get at so I made mine mechanical. loosen up the drive and added switches to the lock motors. I run the lock down motors and lift the top by hand. Very fast, but I can't do it stuck in traffic. This is ok until I get the time to remove and repair this controller. Just a note the lock down brass gears are going to be offered separate probably next month retail. You know the gears that disintegrate over time.
