87 944 won't start/run

My 1987 944 base / automatic recently failed to start but started later. It quit soon after. It may or may not start now. I replaced the DME relay without success ( started and ran for a short while) and just now I replaced the crank positioning sensors. It will not start now (maybe later?). Prior to replacing the sensors the tach would bounce when cranking but does not bounce now. I suspect replacing the DME is next. Any suggestions before I do that? Is there a difference in the DME between an automatic and manual transmission models?
