Improvements for '90 964
Hi,
I'm about to buy a '90 964 w/ 151,XXX miles: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406491514.jpg What improvements should I consider making as soon as I get it? Thanks in advance, Russell |
If it has never had a top end rebuild than it probably needs one.

As Merle pointed out, at that mileage you'll want to be very aware of your valve guide health, distributor belt, plug wires, engine mounts, but if all is well then I'd humbly suggest:
Exhaust - cup pipe helps but a header exhaust yields the most gains and sounds great Airbox - mostly for sound, but drill the airbox cover for 2-3 hp and a nice intake sound Chip - even stock, but especially with exhaust or flywheel mods, the Steve Wong or Steve Weiner chip choices rock Suspension - it looks like it's already lower but if not, there are several choices Wheels - 17's are the sweet spot, tighter handling and better look (subjective) than the D90's Beyond this - stuff get's pretty expensive (LWFW, Motec, gears, etc) |

what's your budget and do you have a goal in mind?
Bilstein PSS10 coil overs and rear strut tops 993 Turbo “Big red” brakes, braided lines 18" work brombacher wheels Semi-solid engine and trans mounts Fabspeed RSR headers and muffler 993 mirrors and door handles Ducktail Recaro pole position seats RS carpet and door trims Cup cams Chip should I go on? :D |
The previous owner lowered it an inch.
Hi JV911SYDNEY, Right now my main focus would be fixing up the interior because it's not in good shape. I'm not sure about the budget right now. I'd like to keep it around $6K but if I have to do engine work then that'll more than double it. But do please go on with more ideas if you like. Thank you everyone for your input. This is my first one so I'm very excited. -Russell |
First thing I'd do is give it a thorough post purchase inspection and service. Then you'll know exactly what you're up against and can budget time and money accordingly.
You could easily blow a few grand doing miscellaneous stuff like oil hoses, diff seals; steering and drive shart boots etc. If you have to overhaul air-con then that can cost quite a bit. Two ways to approach the interior - the aforementioned stripped out look with RS carpet and door trims and bucket seats. Alternatively you can restore/reupholster to its former glory. Both options will use most of your $6k to do it properly. |
