Oil dipstick question
I just had my oil changed and my oil level gauge is roughly 3/4 full however I cannot get a reading on the dipstick. I ran the car for 20 minutes, parked on a level surface and let it idle for a minute or so and checked the level while idling. It almost looks like part of my dipstick broke off. Does this picture of it look correct and intact.

Mine doesn't look like that, but I found a variety of images on Google and there were differences. FWIW I measured mine and it was ~978mm long (~38.5") from the end to the underside of the flange on the handle.

Maybe mine is broken off. It only measures 33.75" from the tip to where the flange of the handle seats.

What year and engine?
Float in oil storage tank is wonky and not a good measure of oil level on 993. Dip stick in measuring level in storage tank and the only real way to insure you have the right level of oil. |

Never trust the gauge, they are known to be wonky

Don't automatically buy into the "The oil level gauge never works" song and dance. There are a lot of folks with both 964 and 993 models who have perfectly functioning oil gauges.
As for your dipstick, go by a shop or dealership or find a local owner with the same model car as yours and simply ask them to compare your dipstick to another that is known to be the correct part and is intact. If yours is broken or the wrong one, it will be evident immediately. Once you know for sure that you have the proper dipstick, use the dipstick to check and fill the oil per factory instructions (Hot engine, level ground, engine idling for a couple of minutes, etc.) Only then can you determine if your oil level gauge is functioning properly. If it's not functioning properly, the possible causes are most often fairly straightforward and the fixes fairly simple. |

Hum wonky = "The oil level gauge never works", I think not.
wonky adjective (Brit, informal) 1. shaky or unsteady 2. not in correct alignment; askew 3. liable to break down or develop a fault All the above can describe the oil gauge in the oil tank, but none describe a dip stick. I stand by my observation, float in tank is wonky. |
