Recessed number plate
Decided to recess my front number plate today. Don't know why, just felt like it.
I think it turned out really well and are most happy with it. Whilst it is certainly NOT for everyone, for those that are interested, this is how I did it. I bought some flush fitting number plate perspex covers, took my number plates off and using the number plate cover as a template, drew around it. ![]() Using my dremel with a cut-off disk, I cut all the straight lines first, then using a router piece, did the edges. ![]() Once the piece was out, i noticed that there was a small gap between the 'smile' and the bottom part of the bumper where I had just cut out. I could have probably left it like that, but it seemed too flimsy. ![]() So, I put some self-adhesive rubber strip between the bottom of the bumper and the top of the smile - was a perfect fit. ![]() I drilled a couple of holes to mount the number plate and using some threading tools, threaded the hole. ![]() ![]() I drilled a hole through the bumper and using a trim screw, attached the smile - it is quite hidden and you can't see from the front. It is nice and rigid now. ![]() ![]() I sanded around the edges of the cut out to clean it up a bit, then using a brush, touched up the edges. I painted the aluminum back bumper black where it showed through the hole. All that was left to do was mount the number plate to the aluminum, then mount the number plate frame on top and into the aluminum through the plate. Not the best of pictures, but you get the idea.
