Can crank shaft pulley be taken of with impact?

I'm trying to change timing chain housing gaskets after pulling and separating engine and tran. I cannot locate a flywheel lock and our host is 19 day's out from having one. Is it safe to use a impact to take off the crank shaft pulley to get the AC bracket off ? Or is that a really bad idea. Thank for answering my newbie questions.

That has been debated before with I believe quite a few saying not to do it. I have taken out the small hex bolts before instead. You have to keep exactly same alignment to reinstall. I ran a wire through one hole after I removed the first bolt and tied it to keep a reference to alignment.

Btw, make sure you shave off a little of the AC bracket so that it can slip on and off without removing the crank pulley. Saves time and effort the next time you need to take off the AC bracket.

Thanks for responding. I'm not seeing the small hex bolts on my crank pulley though? Just a bolt in the middle and two hole slots? Yes I'll def shave those tabs off the AC bracket. I don't get why they designed the bracket like that ?

wesleyc -- do you have a 964 or a 993? It sounds like a 993 if you don't have the hex bolts. The 964 and 993 seem to have different crankcase pulleys (pictures here.

I'm in a similar situation on my 993 -- engine dropped, transmission off -- and need to remove the crankshaft pulley, but haven't decided on an approach yet. When I removed the flywheel, I used a strip of metal with two holes in it rather than a flywheel lock. One hole goes on a engine-transmission stud and the other use a pressure plate bolt to connect the metal strip to the flywheel. I don't have a picture handy, but can get one tonight -- I think I saw this in Wayne's book but maybe on the internet. For the metal strip, I happened to have a flat piece of Simpson Strong-Tie with holes already in it.

I would like to know how you end-up solving it.

Yes Willus. I have a 993. I went ahead and took the flywheel off. Thought I might be able to put a couple of the bolts back in and leverage against the engine yoke. But I'm apprehensive about putting very much torque on it in that position? So ... I'm Still scratching my head ?

I worked around the AC bracket to get the tc cover off. It can definitely be done. I didn't want to chance messing the timing up. Thanks
