Chain Tensioner - correct way
Hi, I am changing a few gaskets and seals on my 1990 964 Carrera 4. I have a question around the correct orientation for the chain tensioner on the right hand side of the engine (UK drivers side) This is the one that points down. My question is which is the end of the chain tensioner that needs to point down. Is it Photo A or Photo B: -
Photo A http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425565478.jpg Photo B http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1425565497.jpg I put it all back together before and I have a really clackety noise. So hoping I had it the wrong way round..... |
Good Morning! go to "search forums"
this was just covered several pages back. Your timing is almost fortuitous ! (almost) |
I just saw it further down the page...

You're not the first to have that noise as a result of installing that exact item backwards. Counting wesleyc and myself, you're at least the third, and I doubt the ranks stop there. You'll find an excerpt from the workshop manual when you get to the other thread, but another thing to keep in mind is how it works. The oil is fed into the hole that you see on one end of the tensioner and that oil comes from the pyramid-like cap that is bolted down on the outside of the chain box.

Thanks for the help. Finally got around to reinstalling chain tensioner. This time the right way round and the knocking noise has gone. As described oil nipple points toward the cover.
