Valve cover replacement
Hi,
The "gasket leak" thread prompted me to start working on my baby. This thread lit a fire under me to get some things done. I started by adjusting my valves. Since I had the covers removed, I went to take them to my mechanic to bead blast them in order to paint them,as AOW162435 suggested. I was then surprised by the mechanic's tech telling me that the upper covers needed to be replaced. I then took a look at the price of valve covers...geez!!! $458 for 1? My question: Can valve covers be machined to level? If so, how much will that cost? Are there any after market covers worth the money? I don't know the original material, but it doesn't seem to be aluminum. I replaced the lower valve covers on my 70 911 with later valve covers. Can the same be done w/ the 964? I'm going to try working on some more leaks this weekend before I get back to the cover issue, but I'd appreciate any comments. TIA, Heinz

Hi,
I believe my valve covers may be magnesium. I'm currently looking for aftermarket covers as $458/cover is way too expensive.

I know the early 964 valve covers were mag, at least mine are. The two problems that I could anticipate are warping and corrosion. Yes, they can be machined. In fact if the warping isn't too bad, you can bring them flat again by working them back and forth with wet-or-dry sandpaper on a piece of heavy plate glass or something similar. Corrosion on the other could lead to the need for replacement if it's too bad. Unfortunately, magnesium can corrode pretty badly. If it needs replacement, I would look for a used one.

I have the Hargetts covers on top (got a deal on the parts forum) and Rennlines on the bottom
Rennline has the plug wire holders and am generally pleased, Plug connector fit is not as tight as OEM but I have not noticed any issue in the year I have been running them 993 covers will NOT fit the 964..

Hi,
The covers were definitely warped and all of the paint inside the covers is starting to flake. The expense of having them blasted and repainted was to expensive vs. total replacement. I went ahead and ordered a set of uppers and lowers, as well as, thecomplete gasket set from our host. I went with the aluminum billets rather than the OEM magnesium. I'll keep y'all informed.
