Massive oil leak -- 2002 996 Tiptronic

A friend of mine, Shannon Moffitt (Pelican alias: Weapon Of Choice), sent me the following images. The car is a 2002 996 Tiptronic, and is owned by his father, who's only been able to put 1,200 miles on the clock since he took delivery of the car. He is the first owner.

The engine is currently in bits at the Porsche Center Melbourne, awaiting replacement parts from Zuffenhausen.

According to the service manager, the leak is coming from one of the gasket-less cam covers and the crankcase through-bolts.

What would cause something like this?

Post Cam cover leak

Most of the brown residue in those photos is cosmoline, a waxy protective undercoating Porsche uses to undercoat all their cars. They've used this stuff forever, and there is still traces of it on my 944. If all that was oil, there'd be a bigger puddle on the ground. I work at a Porsche dealer in Princeton, and I've seen my share of cam cover leaks, particularly on model year 2000 996/986's. The covers are gasketless, and I've found that typically when they leak, it's not due to sealant failure, it's due to small areas which were never coated, or coated too lightly. The leak from the crankcase through bolt is extremely rare, but if it's from one of the torx head bolts visible from outside the case, the engine doesn't need to be totally disassembled, fortunately.

the porsche has gone through 1/2 - 3/4 of a liter in the last 500 miles, which is a lot of oil.

yes it is leaking through a gasketless seal, probaly not enough was put on, but hey i know a subaru legacy that went for 24000 km (13-14000 miles) without a gasket and with out leaking until the last 100 km of that run....

i hope to see the car back on the road by then end of the week and i also hope that this is the only problem with the car

the only sad part is that dad is now looking at his porsche purchase with regret
