964 vs. 993 vs. 911 74-89
Hi Guys,
Reading the other 964 vs. 993 postings I thought the following... I would agree the 911 board has more traffic then the 964 board, but then you can make comparisons all day long between this and that. I guess this shouldn't be the case since you guys are all here and posting, plus I work at pelican and own a 964 too. So we just need more info to share and we would have the same results? Ok, we will always will be out numbered, but who cares. I don't have the time to read rennlist like I used to, and Im even a Gold Member from way back. If the 911 74-89 owners knew what we know, They all would have or want a 993 or 964 too, you know what I mean. Granted you don't see 911s on the road like Hondas, but I got rid of the Honda for that reason, and not look like one of the heard..haha I have repaired many of the spoke of items in addition I updated all the normal car guy upgrades. Due mostly to limited time, I just have not listed them here yet. I check in at least once a day if possible and would like to post more, but its a fine line between work and play. After work, its either the gilrfriend, the kids are waiting, or the Porsche is waiting for the latest project. Tonight its finish off the seat bolt removal problem. Got them out, but now I need to clean up after the grinding/cutting, add the replacement seat belt receiver, pull out the drivers seat and figure out where the slop is and adjust, re-modify the fire extinguisher mount again since its out, find out the DME number so I can order a chip and that should take care of those problems. Un Saturday I took care of a tire cutting problem. Seems the edge of my fender needed to be trimmed. Yep, its listed un the tech bulletins as a problem. Cut the crap out of my new tires before I could fix it. Im sure I have compromised the speed rating, but tire just has a few extra deep groves around the out side edge and since I has a nail patched in the rear, I lost the rating anyways. I worked on my 964 list of upgrades, installed parts and need to repair list. I will post them as I get there and try to be a value added part of all of this. I don't know it all and Im learning, but if I can help I will. Might have to be after hours, but try me if you need to. See ya, Don

Here is the latest 964 info - I just added the December 911 Porsche World to the catalog. The catalog will reload tonight after midnight sometime, if you want one.
Two topics that might interest you 964 guys.... 1)Possibly one of the best roads going 964 this side an RS 2)Fitting Aero Mirrors to an 964 Ok, I have done allot in the line of upgrades, but the engine is limited to intake and exhaust. I have the Aero mirrors, the factory info to replace them, had them painted. I haven't added the new mirrors yet because I had been waiting on new door handles and I didn't want the down time with the doors apart. It looks like you do not have to take the door apart to add the mirrors, but it shows cutting the harness to add them. I wanted to take the harness apart with the special tool, but if I can save a saturday afternoon and still add them, I will do it that way! Hmm, maybe tonight ? Ok, that might be pushing it. I haven't read the stories yet, but the first thing I will do when I get home tonight. take care, Don ![]()

Sorry to dump on your thread, but it made me think that the lack of traffic was due to some false negativity.
I cringe ever time I see something in writing about this was or that BAD_BAD_BAD … BLA_BLA about my 964! My experience with Porsches is not all that long (17 years ownership) and have worked on many air-cooled engines over the 28 years (Aircraft, 914, 911T ’72, 964 C2 ’91). I see some negative articles about the Cylinder Head Gaskets (or lack of), Dual-Mass Flywheel, and the gushers of oil leaks under the engine, to Power Steering Pump Leaks. My guess that these people don’t remember the problems any other car with any fun-factor may have. I’m glad I not driving a Honda! My engine has never had the cylinder heads off the engine and shows no signs of leakage. The only failure figures I have seen have been in the 5% range. Not a very large number, I guess 95% of were extremely lucky… The Dual Mass Clutch in my car needs changing at 104,000 miles. I haven’t seen any figures on this, but have studied it for over a year. I plan to replace the Flywheel, Cover or Pressure Plate, Friction Disk, and Throw-out Bearing in the very near future. I find in the history of my car, that the engine was removed, de-flanged and re-flanged at the Dealership in 1995, I bought the car in 1999 and the clutch was a little grabby and made a little noise. The replacement parts that I have procured have been from later years, with the different disk, a newer flywheel, improved throw-out bearing and guide. All total I have about $800 in the complete package. Yes $800 for all of it! I think I will change out the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder, which will drive up the cost another $130. I guess this puts it at less than $100 per year of service. Not bad in my opinion. Oil Leaks, yes they can be many on any engine that has so many junctions! Aircraft engine weep oil everywhere. My old ’72 911T that I drove for 13 years and over 180,000 mile on my overhaul had leaks from time to time. Whenever I replaced seals I made sure that I used the best seal material I could get. I feel that Viton is one of the best rubber materials that one can find without going to some oddball material. I think that if you ever get a 911 engine sealed up you will need to cut it open with a sawzall because you have either welded the junction together, or used epoxy to seal up. I say this as a joke, because I am sure that at least one of has achieved the Zen art of engine sealing a 911. What I am saying is that yes engine oil is a persistent problem in any internal combustion engine. My Hydraulic Pump leak was actually the O-Ring Seal for the PS Pump Support around the Drive at the cylinder head. I remember the first time I removed the oil temperature thermostat, the O-Ring was so hard I though it was some strange plastic seal, rather than a rubber seal that had gotten old. I guess I should complain about the three window list switches that I have replaced and re-replaced in as many years, but I will not. Ops, I guess I have. I have thoroughly enjoyed my 911’s with or with out the problems.

Well, they're not really a Priority Action Item, so I'm not too concerned.
