Repairing ground/earth points

Hi,

I'm staring at at least 2 ground points in my empty engine bay. They're rusted to ...

I've tried putting a spanner on them but the nut is now totally rounded. If I put much more effort/strength into their removal they're likely to disintegrate entirely.

Any/all suggestions welcome, please.

TIA

John

Hello, have you tried a dremel/die grinder to remove the fastener? Including a picture might help. Good luck.

Funnily enough I bought a Dremel a few days ago. I haven't used it yet.

I tried to upload photos before but I'm a noob. I couldn't find out how to do it! I'll try again.
Easy as! I'm not sure why I couldn't do it before.

My Dremel is only a couple months old. Love that thing.

Your joint seems to be a weld stud and nut. Do you have Vise Grip pliers? I would try that first. You want to make sure you don't hurt the ground stud threads. You only want to replace the nut.

I totally agree. I do have a vice grip but I'm concerned about breaking the stud. The cable attached has no extra length either so I can't afford to damage it by using heat!

Quite a conundrum.

Yes, a conundrum. Have you checked the resistance with a multimeter to ensure it's a bad ground? Maybe leave it alone, if the resistance if ok? Hopefully somebody has run into this problem and can advise further.

Try one of the higher-dollar penetrating oils? Kroil is very well regarded; you can get it from McMaster-Carr.

I'm going to try a product called Freeze and Release. I'll report back as to my results.

Patients and penetrating/rust oil. Sometimes helps to clean out down around the first thread w a pin or the like. If you get a good grip w anything, do small loosening and tighting movements, keep soaking it, even light tapping to gradually break the rust seal.If there is a way do small cut in the side of the nut u can use a hammer/ small chisel or screwdriver to gently " chock" it both ways.

Glad you got it off. Is "Freeze and Release any different from other penetrating oil products?

Wurth makes a similiar product which I have used with great results, didnt know loctite got in the game! It freezes the part which allows the oil to penetrate..
