Offset for a 90 C2

According to the manual, offset for my year is 52. Is this right? I'm looking for new wheels and I'm wondering how big or wide can I go? Can I fit 18's? Can I go with 10" wide? I found some 18 x 8 50 offset, and 18 x 11 45 offset. Will this fit? It doesn't seem that it will. It looks like 17 x 9 will be the size in the rear. Your response is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Have you checked this out?
http://www.porsche964.co.uk/rev_rep/aufwheels.htm
It might be of some help.

The workshop manual specifically mentions fitting Cup wheels to the 964, but (crucially) doesn't mention fitting 18" wheels.
I've seen 964s with 18" wheels, but as far as I know they have all had different or modified flares/fenders. 18" wheels were either fitted or optional on the RS 3.8 (I don't know which), but the flares and fenders on that car are different. Even one new fender is an expensive proposition (ask me how I know this ) , flares more so, I'd guess.

I have also heard handling suffers going from 17", but I have no first hand experience, so make of that what you will.

I personally wouldn't go with 18"ers, but I'm very happy with my 17" Cup wheels.

I think the biggest you can do is 8x18/10x18 like on the 3.6 Turbo but it's a tight fit and rolling the fender lips may be required. Also the tires may rub the inside at full lock with larger size tires. Finally 18" wheels are not approved in a 964 according to Porsche unless you have the beefier Turbo running gear.

eion,

Do you have any pix of your car? I would love to see some 17" cups on a 964. Since my car is linen gray metallic, I'm thinking about going with some cups powder coated black.

I do have a picture of my car:

I personally wouldn't powder-coat a set of Cups black, but that's just me... they look pretty good as it is. They seem to be one of the most common upgrades for early 964s.

I'm running 17x8's with 225/45/17 on the front and 17x9's with 255/40/17 on the rear:

I think my next set of tires I will try to put 265's or 275's (do they make 'em in 17's?) in the rear.

John, I put some 02 Carrera 10 spoke wheels on my 964 and I really like the looks. Offsets are just right for the car too.

The wheels are 17s x 7 and 9s.

What modifications did you make to get them to fit, and what do you think about the handling changes?

Wink

There were no modification except for 14mm spacers on the back. This was necessary to clear the oil lines on the right rear. The front bolted in directly. Offsets front 52mm and rears 61mm-14mm spacer = 47mm.
The handling is awesome. I had 17" Cup wheels on the car prior and the steering now is much lighter and you can really feel the road and the car seems glued to the road. The ride is a tad bumpier but hardly noticeable unless you hit a large imperfection in the road. However, boy am I afraid of potholes now!

Question

Hmmmm, how odd... according to every source and anecdote I've seen, the fenders need either to be flared or at least significantly rolled... no problems when the steering is at full lock, either? How curious...
I know that the 964s that Porsche approved 18" wheels for all had flares. I don't know that the front fenders were a different part or not, but I can probably find out.

As an aside, I don't suppose you still have your old wheels and you'd care to part with them? I'd love another set of Cups.

Hi Eion,
No problems whatsoever even at full lock. My fenders both front and back are the standard narrow body and the fenders have not been rolled. I think I would run into some clearance issues in the rear if my car were dropped but no problems now. I had the same concerns before I bought the wheels but was given some very sound advice from Wheel Enhancement.
I do have my 17" cup wheels boxed and taking up too much space in my garage. They are chrome plated and in very good shape. Send me an email and we can talk. Thanks.

You can fit even 19" rims on your car. A lot of these guys don't have a clue as to what works. Do some research, Ruf makes 19" rims for your car, call HRE, or By Design etc...

It's not that we did not do any research or do not know. You can make anything fit with the right offsets, tire profile, etc. Even though I am running 18's on my car, Porsche has not approved anything larger than 17's for our 964's. I am running the factory wheels for the 1994 964 Turbo which had a beefier suspension and components. I know there is increased stress on my NA suspension but since I do not track, I will accept the risks.

I am currently running 40 and 35 series tires front and back to keep the diameter as close to original as possible. With 19's, you'll need to run 35 and 30's which would make your rims highly susceptible to curb rash and pothole damage.

Since most of us Porsche owners prefer to drive our cars rather than look at them, I am betting that is the reason you do not normally see a Porsche running large (19,20's) diameter wheels. Those 20's are currently on my Navigator.

Eric,

Your car actually helped me make up my mind if I should go black or not. I have the wheels black already but didn't take any pix. I went with the cup 2's as well. It's in my garage now on jacks. I'm replacing some oil lines and cleaning the underside. Here's a pic after lowering and corner balance.

John,
You r car is going to look GREAT! I get people asking me all the time about the wheels and who much they liked the look of the black wheels, and the silverish gray color of the car.
The will take on a very racer look. Please post pic's after ya get them on and the car settles back to the normal ride height after getting off the stands. what did ya lower her to?

Eric

Eric,

Yeah, that was my intended goal, to get that racer look. Actually, the wheels are on the car but the rears are off. I'm changing my rotors and going with cross drilled rears and slotted fronts. I'm thinking about painting the calipers yellow. What do you think? Too rice? Or how about red? I think the yellow will be awesome which will compliment the sparco logo on my seat and the yellow center band on a steering wheel I'll be getting.

Fender Heights:
Front - 24.75
Rear - 24.50

My camber is set pretty aggressive and I was able to fit some 255/40's in the rear and 225/45's up front with no fender rolling. It is also known to increase the steering stop from 6mm to 10mm but I have yet experienced any rubbing at full turn.

Hey, have you thought about painting the center caps or getting caps with the inlaid crest? I think they'll look pretty sweet.

BTW, are you also user 'stuttgart'? Or is that someone with the exact same name? Just wondering.

John,
Thats a great ride height nice and low.... I think yellow would be a good color. I have red calp's, no it's not "RICER" I always say to myself if the factory puts it out on cars then it's NOT rice.. lots of guys paint the calp's .. It look better than plain old gray or black when you open up the view with 993 wheels.. So I say go yelllow I have a friend with a Chocolate brown SC and he has yellow commenting colors and it looks great.. As for the caps.. nope I never run withthem on I don't need the extra weight! hahaha plus I like the look of the car without them on.. but thats just me.. more race like. plus I am afraid to get nice one as the DAMN! kids around here will take them so I simply go with out.
I was posting under (Stuttgart) I have really had to post under three uder names hahaha! but no thats not my screen name It's my roomates and I have also posted under my other roomates name aswell I didn't have a computer for the longest while so I was posting with thier accounts.. But I ONLY post under (Eric Mckenna) now as I have my own computer... yeah It was odd for a while. hahahha
Please post a pic of her when you're all done.. I bet she is GREAT looking!
