993 Daytime Driving Lights?

Hey Guys,

I just imported a beautiful 993 C2S into Canada, and now I need the government mandated "Daytime Driving Lights" on... is there a quick fix like an electronic module I can get to plug into the fuse box?

Any suggestions are welcomed!

I need to update my profile with : 993 C2S Ocean Blue Metalic

Thanks in advance!

T.G.

Congratulations Terb,

Info taken from here: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-forum/484959-daylight-running-lights.html

"We added a relay into the spot in the panel which is reserved for a Daytime Running Light relay, but which in your car will be blank - it is R63. We actually went to an auto wrecker and got a relay from a 90 vintage Passat. The relay is purple and the part # is: VWAudi 431 951 253G -- there is also another set of #'s on the relay: V23124-B52-X372. We simply added that relay and our daytime running lights were in working order!"

I was even more redneck, and just jumped the connection at the foglamp relay (can't remember which one off the top of my head). Works well enough to pass safety.

Regards,

Ben

Terb,

I would love to see your car one day. I am in the hunt for a 993 and would be interested in hearing about your search and import experience. I also live in Calgary - and while still chipping the ice away from the garage - I hope to have a car soon. BTW - great photo too!

Cheers,
Thom.

I undid my ghetto relay mod and put in the correct relay as indicated above. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. DRLs work like a charm.

Another quick option is to move the fog light relay to R63. Gives you DRL, but obviously the fogs won't come on with the headlights.

So this is the story about DRL. The Relay cannot just be put in... as there is a Blank covering where the relay is supposed to go! My neighbor with a Porsche Boxster went to the local dealer for the DRL and the Provincial inspection, and ouch, some $ 800.00 later yes, it was done! I went to my favorite VW aftermarket shop where for $ 80.00 they removed the relay for the fogs, they did something and now the fogs are always on, voila DRLights! For the provincial test, pick your garage (read mechanic) carefully, I had it done by a "friendly" mechanic for $ 120.00, then "off" to Can. Tire for the Federal inspection ( I had the mandatory Tether Bolt for the Child restraining Seat lying on the passenger seat, the Glovebox open, with French language visible ( I am not sure why they had put that in a US model? The guy at Can Tire never looked at much, just signed off ( he Faxed the inspection sheet to RIV) and then I was off to get the Carrera its properly registered license plates. A week later I had a sticker in the mail to prove the car had been properly imported and you have to glue that to a door post or the door.

End of story, now waiting for the gravel to be swept from the roads, there is aton of that stuff!

Happy motoring!

Your mechanic just jumped two of the pins on the the relay. I can't believe that they could charge you $80 for that! That was my ghetto mod to get me through Provincial Safety.

Lone Wolf,

My 993 did not have the Relay either. I went to my trusty VW aftermarket shop (Concept 1), they put a "bridge"in the fuse box (not sure how) so that the Foglights are always on when you start the car, it cost $ 80.00 as I recall now 8 years ago...

My 993 was sold last Febr. so I cannot provide any more details, sorry, I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Bert
