chrome door handles ?

I am in the process of backdating my 964 and wanted to drill and chrome the handles.

The shop that has done work like this in the past for me has told me that they can't do this on the handles because the mechanism is forged in and that dipping them to remove the powder coating and or chrome them will most likely damage the mechanism.

any alternatives you guys can think of??

There are some chrome-like powder coats available, but I'm not sure you're any better off with that. I guess I don't really understand what the fact that the parts may be forged has to do with the mech failing after PC removal?

Garage
I was going to use this guy's method, but am wondering if I'll mess up the mechanism by submerging the whole handle/mechanism in the lye solution?
