964 Cassette to CD upgrade - factory units?

I'm getting a '91 964 next week (thanks DCinVA) which has a factory cassette player. I'd like to upgrade to a newer factory CD player.

Does anyone know what factory CD players are a direct swap out?

I've been through the high powered mega systems years ago and have no desire beyond pulling one head unit for another, with minimal to no wiring, fishing behind the dash, etc.

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

Those factory cassette players are getting expensive, so hold onto it. I haven't been able to find one that is a good price for my 964.

If you have the CR-1 the CD-2 should be a direct swap but still a crappy unit. These are very hard to come by and way overpriced for the poor sound quality. Do a search on the CDR210 and CDR220 I believe they require a harness adapter to work and I don't know if they work with the factory amp. These are supposedly better sounding.

Make sure if you buy any of these used they come with the code to unlock them.

If you have the Blaupunkt Stuttgart radio I don't know what to tell you.

It might be worth doing a little wiring to get reasonable sound. I swapped mine out for nakamichi CD500 and it made a huge improvement but required rewiring the speakers. although I rarely turn mine on.

Also odds are the factory speakers are probably shot. The fronts I believe are still available from Porsche for under $40 each and the rears I believe are NLA.

As Cobalt mentions, a CDR-210 or CDR-220 will fit and work. I went with a CDR-220; Becker NA switched out the faceplate for a modified unit. This is necessary as the viewing angel is different for a 964 then a 996. (Seems the price from the revised faceplate has increased from $100 to $150 with core.)

SW Stereo will provide a wiring harness if you prefer not to make any permanent alterations.

I'm pretty happy with the CDR-220 as it seems durable (well, it works) but more importantly, looks factory.

Becker NA also sells AUX cables. Glad to further comment.

Thanks for the advice guys. For the time being I'll probably just use a cassette adapter for my cheap MP3 player. I've got a box of old cassette tapes, but I'd be afraid to put them in anything, they are so old.

I believe you can pick up the factory CD 6 disc exchanger somewhat cheap that is mounted in the front. It will require running the cable from the deck to the player. You will also need to drill into the tub to mount it but it is pretty straight forward. Again not the best unit since it was from the early 90's but an option.

This is the perfect answer! There are bluetooth adapters for the stereo plug.....
