noise inside drive side door - door panel removal

95 993 - Opened up my driver door panel after some noise and found the regulator coil spring and a small round silver part the spring appears to sit in to be sitting at the bottom of the door. This smaller part is damaged. Has anyone repaired one one of these regulators or should I just not mess with it and replace the whole unit? Never done one of these but I am assuming after the usual huffing and cussing I should be able to do the repair.
