Please Help,
My battery on my 92/964, died and I installed a new OEM batter, when I went to turn the key nothing happened. I left the key turned to the right while I checked the battery cables to ensure they were on tight then I smelled electrical fire lifted the rear hood to find my generator on fire. Besides taking it to a specialist, any suggestions or reasons why this happened? |

Maybe the positive terminal cable was touching the body?

Are you sure that the alternator wasn’t the culprit all along? Nevertheless, maybe you fried the diodes in the alternator possibly by grounding the alternator wire when making adjustments with the system under load?

That sounds more like the engine harness grounding as has happened on most if not all early 993's.
The answer is to replace the main engine harness which includes the alternator ,starter and oil pressure functions . This occurred so much the '96 year and earlier had recalls of this harness, when I removed the alternator on my TT the power + and ground - wires shielding was crumbling and the car constantly ran the battery down .. Replaced for free twenty some odd years on by the dealer , Bert
