1990 964 c4

I recenly purchased a 1990 964 c4. It developed a problem. when it is idling or when you are driving, the ignition seems to cut off, jerking the car. at idle the car will stall, and when you hold the throttle the rpm keeps on cutting off.
any sugestions. I already changed the distributer unit, i put a new one.
any theroies would help
thanks

This is not an uncommon problem with 964's, and most of the fixes are pretty simple. Go to the 964 board on rennlist.com and do some searches. There are many well documented things to try. I had some idle problems with my 92 C2, and in my case it was a weak battery and a bad transmission ground strap ($15).

Go to rennlist and do some searches.

How about your DME/Fuel Pump Relay. This Relay powers the Ignition-Fuel Injection Computer and the Fuel Pump. Does it behave like someone turned off the key and restart after a short time?

Well, they say "Always Carry a Spare", even with the new Relay. You are using the new relay that starts with 993, correct?

How cold is cold?

When I trouble shot my DME Relay, before I realized that this was a very talked about and troublesome relay, I noticed that there was condensation under the DME Relay cover. My old one was the older 964 variety and it showed signs of over-heating. You might pop the cover off the relay and see what you can find, condensation wise.

My car used to stall after 2 minutes of operation from 60F. So these relays don’t need to heat up for a long period of time and then open.

The US version 964’s headlights turn off when the engine stalls or stopped. When you were driving and the engine quit, did you happen to notice that while you were coasting, that the headlights went out? Maybe this will isolate a DME Relay vs. anyother problem. ???

I think I would replace the relay and put your current one in the glove box and see what happens.
