Carrera 4 rear air dam
So here’s my problem. I’ve owned this car for sixteen years (or it’s owned me). The air dam raises automatically at 55 miles per hour. There apparently is a weakness in the panel in the upper painted frame panel. A vertical crack in the fiberglass appears on both sides about ten inches in from the sides on both sides. I’ve taken the panel off the car and it appears it was manufactured in two pieces. Those pieces were joined together at the factory and can’t be separated. I epoxied the space around the edge of the air dam to stabilize the two pieces from underneath and then had my body shop fill in the cracks and repaint. Two weeks later the cracks are reappearing. I am fearful in replacing the panel as at 1000.00 for a new one the same thing my happen. FYI the cracks are in line with the brackets that support and raise the panel. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Much discussion about this on Rennlist - 964 Forum if you search. I understand Sunset sells the spoiler for about $750. Someone on Rennlist also mentioned it is possible to adjust the retraction of the spoiler so it doesn't hit the deckled, which may contribute to the cracks.

There is also the option to change the automatic feature to manual activation.
https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/t-spoiler-advanced-spoiler-control-unit.html The above is one option. There are also threads available to adapt the OEM control unit to make it manual. My 964 spoiler is controlled by the switch so it only activates when I want it / feel it is required. This won't help with the need for your replacement but should save the new one from excessive wear / tear. Chris |
