Ceramic coated pistons for 964
I can see on some supplier that pistons can be delivered with ceramic coated.
I do understand that is a really good heat barrier to avoid cranckcase heating. My question is where is going the heat ? in the exhaust ? what about the heads, isn't it a bad thing for the head to deal with higher temperature (if ever) ? is it relevant for a 964/993 racing motor ?

If heat is not lost to the motor parts then it stays in the combustion gas. This increases torque, since the hot gas expands more strongly, and will also increase exhaust temps as the hot gas exits.
If only the piston tops are coated then the cylinder heads will see a little more heat. Ideally you should coat the piston tops, cylinder heads (only above the pistons, it is not useful for the mating surfaces), and valve faces... i.e. all of the "walls" that surround the combustion. This will minimize heat loss to the motor and maximize the force of each stroke. How measurable the improvement is I do not know. However it seems popular with hotrod and race engine builders and teams. |
