Porsche 964 Engine noise on startup, any input???

			Please help!!!

I've let me 1989 Porsche 964 C4 sit for far too long and on starting it up, there is a very unusual noise coming from the engine (haven't been able to pinpoint location yet). It kinda sounds like a handful of big, angry bees though..... here's a link to a video with the sound. https://youtu.be/M_5am_0fS-0 Also, there is a ton of smoke pouring out of the exhaust.... has happened before when left sitting. I'm reluctant to even let it warm up at this point.... Does anyone have any input what it could be? Is it ok to let it run and warm up, maybe it'll go away? Thanks, TJ |

Have you manager to locate the source of the noise? Poss stab in the dark: had a similar noise appear suddenly. First thought was fan or alternator bearings starting to pack in. Turned out it was the wheel on the fanbelt warning switch that had siezed/broken. Smoke looks like steam, condensation burn off, but lots of it. Allways looks worse in cold outdoor temp. How and where did you have the car stored?

Agree, that looks like Steam not smoke. It’s very hard to isolate sounds when we can’t use two ears to triangulate. It could well be the fan belt sensor wheel. Alternatively the alternator bearing is a possibility. It doesn’t sound terminal. Can you take another video with the Camera in one place behind the engine and point to where you can hear the noise coming from?

Wow. Seems like that one should be pretty easy to track down using a mechanic's stethoscope; it's the perfect tool for this situation.

Whatever is buzzing sounds really light to me; like engine tin touching a whirly bit.

Oil from the tank drains down to the engine sump when parked for a long time then goes thru the piston/oil rings into the combustion chamber. Drive it around the block to heat up the exhaust and burn the residual oil. As far as the noise, nothing serious imo, drive it around the block and observe. When was the last time the valves were adjusted?

I would not run it and would start first with the timing chains. Last time mine smoked that much is after I put a valve through a piston. These are tough machines. I drove it a couple of hundred miles like that coming from Vegas. Replaced the motor though. Rebuilding was too expensive.

In my Safari I installed Rothsport Racing's valve that prevents all that oil leaking down when the car is sitting. Not too cheap, but a nice detail in a build.
