joining the 996 club
![]() Hello All, after a couple year hiatus from P-car ownership I have re-joined the cult; 2002 996tt w/6sp Initial impressions: WOW -> that is some serious torque swell and insane 'legs' when in gear, in boost. 1. Not sure why 1st gear is so short, bordering on silly. 2. That is a LONG & somewhat vague shifter throw 3. Brakes are fully up to the task 4. Did I mention the power? god is good 5. Could the center console be uglier? 6. Awesome steering feel, the front of the car feels very small and tight. 7. This really is a daily-driveable supercard, just needs bluetooth. So, nothing practically to be done about the gearing. But I have taken steps to address 2,5 & 7: 2 = Numerix shift mechanism 5 = GT3 centre console delete ordered from our host 7 = Rennteck bluethooth kid for CDR-220 ordered from our host Adding to 7 - I have the stock turbo twists that the previous owner plasti-dipped, i might remove the spray and turn to a more fun-colour + throw winter tires on to really enjoy all year around (here in Calgary alberta). Background info: Car: 110'000km, most of it's life in Vancouver BC, decent service history the viscousus differential was replaced at 97'000km "due to improper tire sizing", no accidents or outstanding problems. Me: previously rebuild to stock, than modified a 75 911S, missed it from the moment I sold it. Tried to scratch the itch with a 2009 Cayman, which was amazing but always needed a little more mmmppphhhhh. Last couple of years a a '11 STI that was making very good power and was a ton of fun.

Congrats on the 996TT...not just any 996. Completely different engine of course. Pretty solid power plants. There is a potential issue with them however, that has to do with the cooling system. They used glued together aluminum components on the outlet housings to the hoses. Have been known to come apart and dump coolant. Most tracks will not allow the car on track unless you can show service work for pinning the connection in place or having a welded upgrade piece. If it happens on the street, time to flatbed. Proper repair does require engine removal however.
As an aside, spent 7 years in Cowtown. Loved it but don't miss the -40 winter days that happen occasionally.

Yep, next engine-out will pin the coolant lines.
Appreciate the comments, love the Mezger engine and really how sold this car feels. Thinking I have a wheel slightly out of balance with a slight wheel shake ~120km/h

The NumericRacing shifter is amazing --> zero slop, no longer looking at a row-boat throw from first to second, all of the odd gears are a ton of fun to slot into, little bit of effort to get accustomed on 2nd. Would highly recommend.
Waiting for the delivery of the rennteck bluetooth kit from our host ---> as well at the GT3 centre console delete to tidy up that lower dash/more traditional 911 style. Front wheels are both well within spec, road-force balanced came back at +7 and +9 and the wheel 'shake' is gone at all speeds, but there is a very slight 'shimmy' (wheel does not move but can feel it) in the 110-130 range that i think is due to cupping on the front tires. Lots of driving lately, getting comfortable with the car and am still amazed by it's out of corner pull as I un-wind the wheel.
