996TT crankshaft position sensor update

My CPS is going out. When I ordered a new one it indicated the recieving plug had been updated and if I had the original plug I would need to update the plug. I bought the parts to modify the plug but Its hard enough to get to without a lift just to remove and replace the current sensor but to modify the plug while still on the car would be nearly impossible. My thought is to just splice the old CPS connector onto the new sensor. I assume there are three color coded wires in the cable. Unless the old plug is damaged it seems that would be the easiest fix and can be done in a better work situation. Does anyone know why Porsche changed the plug to begin with? Any thoughts on splicing the old CPS connector onto the new CPS ?
