Porsche Crest 996 Convertible top pump and piston replacement?

Any experience or advice for DIY replacement of convertible top hydraulic pump and pistons replacement?

I've had my 1999 996 for 11 years and love it. But now, the convertible top has problems going up/down (slow/jerking). I discovered the hydraulic fluid in the pump was about empty, and when I refilled things worked better. I had the local Porsche dealership take a look at it while it was there for other service, and they diagnosed that the pump and pistons needed replacement for a very large price. I'm trying to decide whether to take this on as a DIY, bite the bullet and pay the man, or sell my baby.

Insights would be appreciated.

According to the Bentley manual I have, there is a procedure for bleeding the convertible top hydraulic system. I can try and attach a scan of the page. Also, do you have a scan tool? The top will throw a limited number of fault codes. My 02 Cab had the cables that release the tonneau cover snap (known problem) and none of my mechanics would touch it, so $3000 went to the dealer for that one.
