What is involved to replace the battery in my 2015 991.1 911 GTS?

Hint: watch this video for tips. Do not attempt to lift the battery over the fender and drop into place. Put the battery on the floor of the front trunk, step into the front trunk and pick up battery and instal. See video:

The battery tray will accept the longer, optional battery. Same CCA's I believe, but slightly more capacity. The dealer will tell you some story about only trained techs can do this, but as said above it's a simple in/out. On the first start I think the computer might require about five minutes of idle time to re-learn whatever it is they do for the car, but mostly it seems to stabilize the idle. Be advised the door/hood/engine cover locks don't work w/o a battery. Probably the steering & throttle also.

I had to "train" my windows in my 2013 Turbo S convertible after a battery install. No big deal just read the owners manual.

When a battery needs to be changed on a 996 ,

Windows must be closed , wheels in line................if not , the wheel angle sensor can necessite a re-calibration , and the windows must be opened and closed to re-learn the position.

So , it's recommended to add a battery charger during the operation , in the goal of not cutting the 12v.

You will also need the radio code if you have the original stock unit

just put a trickle charger on your battery wires and it stays powered 12 vdc as you swap batteries.

Hi I keep a Cetec battery maintainer on my 996 battery when not in use. Can I keep my maintainer attached to the terminals when I disconnect the old battery terminals?
- When the new battery is installed and secured, I can remove the maintainer and there will be no
electronic issues? Are there any precautions I should be careful with when doing this?

Thanks Jim Russo

Connecting my charger/maintainer while the battery was disconnected is how I changed my battery. I've had no issues that I am aware of.

Other precautions:

Standing in the trunk while lifting and pivoting with a 50 pound weight on your back can be physically demanding, but it is the only way to do it. Be aware of the physics involved and plan how you will lift, rotate and lower the battery. I lifted the battery up and paused with it on top of the spare tire; then lifted, rotated and lowered it into the bottom of the trunk. Then I stepped out of the trunk and lifted the battery up and out. Installed the new one by reversing the steps.

For those of us who don't lift weights, this is a great way to pull a back muscle or pop a disk, so do it carefully.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that when I disconnected my battery in my '09 997.2 C2S to replace all four door speakers, I didn't have to reset the radio memory with my preferred stations, nor did I have to "retrain" the windows. I had the battery disconnected twice -- once for four days for the driver's side speakers, and the second time just for a day for the passenger side speakers. The only thing I noticed was a notification that PSM (or maybe it was PASM?) had failed, but that was just a result of the battery being disconnected, I believe, and there have been no further notifications.

I would imagine that for the OP's 991.1 car, the situation would be similar.

Good one, but we should really talk about beers.

And remember, the factory fitted Banner AGM is a quality battery; mine is going into its 9th year this summer. Do the math: May 2015.

I hope he didn't buy a Lithium battery based on many of the false claims made by those in sales and users with no background in batteries.

Now how people spend their money is their business, but the one thing I can't stand are the "claims" made that make absolutely no sense.

So I had some fun on a gloomy day...

I recently changed the battery in my 02 Boxster S . After the change my car had a high idle speed of 1400 . I read online about resetting the egas . Basically you turn the key to run ( don't start the engine ) and leave it on for one minute . Do NOT touch the gas pedal during this procedure.

This procedure fixed my high idle . Not sure if this is a random occurrence or if my car is especially sensitive ? Oddly enough my windows didn't need to be retrained .
