Outer CV boot kit - what style of clamp is this?
Hi folks,
I've been working on my M3 for 17 years and 911 for 14 years, but I've never seen this kind of clamp before -- see the link below. It is even sold individually and just titled "Porsche axle boot clamp": https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/99634925701.htm?pn=996-349-257-01-OEM&bc=c&SVSVSI=0707 My 997.1 911TT has been through two sets of front CV axles now (first set died after around 45K miles, I picked up used axles for $250 each and they lasted about 5 years and ~75K miles) and I'm now just rebuilding my axles as the kits for rebuilding are actually around -- when I last thought of rebuilding they weren't really available. I can kind of get it tightened around the boot and pull the thinner end through the hole on the other side, but I really want to be sure this is installed and tensioned properly as I do not want to be repeating this mess of a job any time soon if the boot leaks all it's grease. This might be the crank type of clamp but it still isn't exactly clear how it would work. |
If I understand you correctly, looking at the first link you provided, that clamp has holes and dimples to allow adjustment of the clamp. You adjust the dimples and holes so the clamp is as tight as possible by hand, and then use special crimping pliers to crimp/crush the rectangular loop in the clamp for ultimate tightness.

The larger Oetiker clamp over the big end squeeze at the square as normal. The smaller strap -thread through and fold over to hold the small end. Don’t try to “seal” the small end too tight it has to breath as it heats up/cools down. The grease will stay up at the big end.

I just re-used the OEM clamps that were on my inner CV boots instead of trying to use the strip that came with the kit.
CV joints fully disassembled, bearings cleaned to the bare metal and inspected, reassembled and grease injected. I think these are $1000 new from Porsche? I'd imagine labor on the install would be 1 hour per wheel, so this would probably have been a $2600 repair that I did myself for like $120, 6 hours of time (getting the inner bearing nut off on one of the axles was nearly impossible), and ruining a shirt and pair of shorts after getting grease all over everything (messy job lol). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689362795.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689362795.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1689362795.jpg |
