The Boxster 2.5, made in 98 and 99, can accept a 996 3.4 motor directly. The 2000 Boxster 3.2 has a different DME version and is not a direct swap. The early 996 3.4 motors, up to and including the MY 2001 will fit.

No, you wouldn't.

We have a customer that did exactly that: Put a Mezger engine out of a wrecked turbo car into a 986. Let me begin by telling you the guy who did the swap owns an automotive fabrication business with all the welding, CNC, milling, and other type equipment you could imagine, so he could make literally anything he needed; and he completed a beautiful installation, which had some shortcomings:
  1. When completed, it had cost as much for him do do the swap as the price of a brand new turbo car sitting on the dealer's showroom floor.
  2. Besides being a total tire destroyer, it could literally smoke the tires from a roll from any speed, making the car difficult to drive much less control.
  3. The car could destroy transmissions and drive assemblies at will.

Be careful what you wish for, the owner of this monster could make anything he needed for the car, but ended up pulling the Mezger out and selling it, and installing the engine that was originally in the car.

A later Boxster/Cayman trans might address the driveline weakness. I believe the transmissions from the early cars were known to be weak.

Well a friend told me 3.2 is common ground but will need some updates to the ecu and fuel system and wiring. If you want power just LS swap your boxster its cheaper then putting a 996 turbo in its about a 20k difference for less hp if you go the 996 tur o route thats 40k for the 996 turbo engine swap vs 17-22k for an ls swap that gives you 700hp your call if you have the money!

We have two customers that went thru an LS swap, both into 996 vehicles; common comments: Never again.
