additional key?
I've only got one key for my '99 996. What are my alternatives for getting another? Do I have to go to a dealer?
|
Yes, you have to go to the dealer.
You also need to have the keyhead programmed to the car. |
Danke. Wie viele kostet das?
|
About 150$ from what I hear. ( I'm in the same boat so I've been scouting this out as well)
|
it beats losing the only key.
|
You have to go to the dealer.
If you are a member of the PCA see if they will give you a discount on parts and labor. |
A good independent can also do this for you. If he has a PST2, he has the capabilities.
|
Local dealer just quoted me $300 to order the key (with proof of ownership) then another $75 once it comes in to match it to the car.
I will call the independent guy. |
I just had a new key made, at the dealer (remote key and valet key) with discount as a PCA member $306.
This included parts and labor. Key head $135.76 blank key $52.62 key cap $42.28 labor to program 1 hour PCA discount 10% I hate using the Porsche stealership but sometimes you need to bite the bullet. |
Or find yourself a local enthusiast like myself who has their own PST2. Regardless it is a good idea to get all the codes for your car from the dealer (DME, immobilizer, learning etc) and keep them in a safe place.

Any enthusiasts local to the NYC metro area? I'm in Somerset county, NJ ...
I see that a PST2 is about $4K, so I won't be joining the ranks anytime soon. |
tholyoak, did you bought the OEM PST2 , or the laptop with PST2 software ?
thanks Martin |
I have the laptop version with the KTS card. It has all the capabilities of the KTS500 based OEM version, I have used it to program DME's and other controllers.

What's the card+software cost??
|
went to my dealer in Scottsdale last weekend. The new key is 350$ and I had to set up an appointment with them next weekend to get it done. Seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I got a keyhead off of Ebay for about 1/2 of what the dealer wanted. Then the dealer ordered the key (only the metal part) from Germany, mated it to the head and then programmed it. Dealer said that Germany is the only source for the keys because they have to be cut there.
|
A good locksmith can cut you a new key if you have the Porsche key blank. ($25 for blank) and a key to copy. It can cost you from $50 - 75$ for the cutting, but they are done in 2 minutes.
The dealers around here do exactly that, bring your car in, bring the key, go to the lcoksmith, give you your car back at end of day. |
I understand what you are saying Laura. It's programming the automatic openers that they claim is unique.
|
What the remote itself for opening the doors at the push of a button?
After retrieving the info from Porsche, about 15 minutes wait time, program with the PST 10 minutes. It's not very unique, we do it all the time. |
Hey -
If I have my main remote key, and the small non-remote key, am I covered if I lose the remote key? Does the small key have all the needed codes in it so the dealer can re-program a new remote head? Thanks! (Just got my 2000 C2 on Friday) |
