HELP picking a 996 -- Coming back to Porsche!
Well, I'm back, after almost 2 years without a 911. I'm looking for a '99-'04 996, coupe (or Targa), automatic, and C2 or C4 -- just for a change after all that air cooled wrenching. Max I can spend is maybe $22K.
I've read a few of the threads about the 996s, but it's still foreign to me. Any advice about where to look for Porsches? Anyone know of one for sale? Lastly, how do I locate someone for a PPI, expecting that I might find THE car anywhere in the States? Thanks for any feedback. |

Rennlist has a much more active 996 forum. Post your question there.
I tend to look at the for sale sections of the various Porsche region web sites for cars to buy.

996 is a lot different than the 911.
Best part is when you first jump in it it will feel like a 911, better. Haven't been reading about cars much, seems like all my free time is spent under them working on them. Where are you? Lots to be found online and then you can find locals to advise you on where to take for PPI. I did see one recently while driving by large (maybe northwest corner hwy 60 and hwy 301) dealership in Brandon (Tampa), FL. From the street at 55mph it appeared burgandy with cork interior not tint. Nice looking 996 FS. Good luck. Regards,

Bernard,
Thanks for the input. I went ahead and bought a 99 996 with a factory-replaced engine 8K miles ago. After struggling with an SC Targa for a few years and enduring the arrogance of a car maker who could not meet the performance, amenities and price of a Toyota, I have to say I like the 996 so far -- and it's not even one of their highly rated model years. (BTW, I'm also the guy who raised the BS flag with Harleys, because I was one of the few people who actually rode and worked on them, rather than bringing it to the dealer when there was a problem.) We'll see if it can bear utilitarian duty of daily driving with no primping and pampering. For an $80K+ car, you gotta expect a substantive return, and for quite a few years, right? |

What is primping? Is that an new term accountants use? Don't worry you shouldn't need that.
![]() And with your new motor, it is hard to go wrong. For many of us, Pcars have been known to provide very good long term return as DD(or so my accountant friend said since my first pcar [SC that he said provided good cost per mile]), if you like that sort of ride. 911299x
