G96-50 current market

Hi I'm Russ, new to the Forums. I've had an '83 SC, '93 C2, and now a '02 C4 cab that I'm building into a turbo street car (most likely only 1-2 track events a year, primarily just a cruiser) with a rebuilt 2001 turbo power plant.

I spoke to Roger at California Motor sports today about my project. He suggested a g96-50 turbo gearbox. My question is, how much is the going rate for these cores or even a box in good condition? He suggested a factory refreshed g96-50 turbo gearbox...at $11k. This is out of my current budget to build on top of this base price.

I spoke to Todd at LA Porsche Dismantlers today as well, he quoted me $5k (box has 29k miles) from a 2003 turbo. Is this pretty standard?

I'm wanting to add an external pump and cooler (I've already got the cooler) eventually, but for now, I'll be running it as is. I'm hoping to purchase this gearbox in the next 30-60 days.

Hi Russ. Sorry I can't be any help with info on the transmission, but I do have a piece of advice for you...........STAY AWAY from Todd at LA Porsche!! He's a rip off guy and you cannot trust him!! I got ripped off by him about 10 years ago and I personally will NEVER use him again!...........even if he had the best price on something! Some say he has changed in the later years, but I'm not going to even try and find out! ...........good luck!

I'm gonna stay out of the LAPD discussion.

I would say that $5K for a "good used" 996 TT gearbox is about right. But if you are going to add the pump and cooler later, why not just shop for a GT2 or GT3 gearbox to start with? They will be a couple grand more, but they'll already have that (as long as you stay away from early G96/90 gearboxes). It's just less brain damage and while it will cost you a little more up front it will cost you less in the end.
