First, let me start by saying I have installed many many fabspeed exhaust systems. I like them. The sound isn't obnoxious, and the build quality is tops.

Now I will tell you what I tell my customers at the shop:

Buy exhausts for sound, chips for mild power, and intake systems to waste your money.

There's a part of that I can relate to, but, there are advantages to each one you mentioned, no?

Those cheap air intake mods do absolutely nothing good for your car. They make more intake noise if that's what you want.

Most of the aftermarket air intakes are actually *worse* than stock and turn the intake into a *hot* air intake unlike the very good OEM box which is a true cold air intake.

The only real upgrade is a dual-snorkel one like the X51 or Werks1 boxes. But those are very expensive and the gain is minimal unless you have also done other mods to make your engine actually need more air.

If you just want some intake noise, do the orange cap / helmholtz resonator disable mod.

Sure.

1: Exhaust. Buy it for more noise.

2: Program the DME. Buy this for some cheap power.

3: Intake. Buy this if money is nothing and the chicks are free.

Porsche doesn't leave much on the table power wise. Yes there is more, there always is. But its not in the intake for a streetable car. Short of yanking the cats- its not in the exhaust either. And DMEs... sort of a grey area, especially if you do have emissions testing.

Of course, you could chuck it all, throw in a monster intake, re-cam it and have a torque monster. Or you could chuck that and build a high velocity intake and have a HP monster. Or you could do what Porsche did, and have the best of both worlds.

(sarcasm)
I mean, hey! Why would Porsche not use that super fantabulous air filter/box combo for 4 gajillion more HP? I mean as a multi billion dollar corporation making some of the fastest cars on the planet- how could something so simple as a fuel magnetic ionizer get past them for an extra 20 mpg?
(/sarcasm)

Porsche has to stay within sound ordinances and emissions restrictions.
Therefore- exhaust for sound. DME for power (that whole grey area with emissions).
And the intake? Porsche isn't really constrained by any legal ramifications there- so do you think that little bolt in kit is really going to pump up that engine?

Porsche Crest Response

Interesting.

1. I think it depends on the firm who developed that item or product in question.
It depends a lot on how much research and developement was carried out, that and as well the given parameters in which they decided to take into consideration during the developement of a architecture.

2. I think some firms fall into the pressure of having to ( push ) a product before they have completed the architecture developement. Also it is important to understand the focal point of why the part was developed and the application, racing and street ( very different. )

3. The other problem is the customer or consumer! I see it every single day, not just amongest Porsche owners. A lot of times people put parts and these parts when in conjunction exceed the potential parameters that the management is capable of supporting and so well ( in short ) the customers vehicle runs in restricted or limp like mode.

And so the management attempts to sort this out but it can't due to a lot of dynamic factors involved in which require a lot of developement to achieve a dynamic and functional formula.

But like I said, a lot of the views here interest me.

4. One last point, a lot of times performance figures are calculated across the rev range. Sometimes items or products are based on working on conjunction to achieve a total out put. Some are even peak rpm gains, so it depends.

But it depends on the philosophic approach of the firm. I also recommend discussing + and - with your specialist. Also remember not to come at the specialist sideways or sort of with a lot of bravado. Listen to what they have to say, try not to play but bla bla bla speed says, and looptie-whooptie werks says that. Qouting specs and performance and so and so did this or that makes any specialists go deaf!

^_^ enjoy!

Remember it depends if they made the parrrt to workkk with tuning of the management or wiiiith ooooouuut, as a the voice fades away off
