996 Repair Estimate

Ok just lookin for a ballbark estimate on the following:

1999 996 with 80K miles on the clock. #1 cylinder is leaking coolant after dash warning light came on. Engine was shut down and no internal failures apparent as there is no oil/water transfer evident...(no milkshake). If you check the heads, replace headgaskets, do the rear main seal and install LN Bearing fix what should this all cost? I'm sure there must be a few folks who can chime in!

The only part I can speak to is the LN bearing replacement. I got a quote of $3000 from a reputable Porsche indy for that and to change the RMS while he was at it. That was on a 2002 996 a couple of years ago. Good luck.

I rather doubt you will get away with "check the heads, replace head gaskets" to repair a coolant leak in one of these engines. You need to be aware that these engines never blow head gaskets, so the coolant leak more likely involves a cracked head.

Yep, most likely a cracked head. There are places repairing them.

External leak? Can you get a Pic? There are other components that can leak:
AOS is one

Cracked head or crack cylinder? I though that the early 996 crack cylinders.

Definitely a possibility with the 3.4L engines.

Speculation is useless. Get it to someone you trust. Tear it down and figure it out. Then you will know what is right for you.
