Tires for 2002 Turbo

I recently bought a 2002 Turbo. I am an old air-cooled guy. The turbo now needs tires. The rears are 295/30-18. Only a few manufacturers make a tire in this size. Since the car is AWD, both the front and rear sizes must be changed if one is going to go to a different tire size. Has anyone used a 305 or 315 on the rear? What corresponding size would be needed on the front? Thanks,

Tom

I stuck with stock OEM Bridgestones. Just replaced them. You can do a search on some other forums that have a higher level of 996 turbo activity to get some good info.

Go to the tire manufacturers web site to find diameter or overall height specs which is critical for AWD. I would also consult oweners manual tire info. I don't know what your goal is to change tire size, but I think you will regret doing it. As a former tire sales man & lifelong tire enthusiast I recommend Michelin Pilot Sports in the stock sizes.

You have to be careful about the overall tire diameter differences between front and rear. If you go with a 305 or 315, you have to ensure that you are within the same diameter ratio between the front and rear as the original tires. Use the actual tire manufactuer specifications for diameter NOT an online calculator or what is posted on a retailers website. This can be a costly mistake which is why I just stuck with the OEM specifications.

I looked at the Falken 615K in 315/30-18 (rear) and 235/40-18 (front). Falken lists them as being the same diameter. In talking with the local tire guy (who is a Spec Miata racer) I finally settled on the Yokohama A048 in the stock sizes. Compared to the old tires (that were 8 years old) the Yokohamas are great!
