what did I do wrong with the starter replacement?

I just replaced the starter on my 1999 996. Now my car starts immediately, but it misfires and has a rough idle. Seems OK on the road at higher RPM's, but it stalled at a stop. It never did any of this before. I checked all of the connections, etc that were removed to replace the starter, everything seems OK. No engine check light. Any idea what I may have done - some specific connection to check? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recheck your vacuum lines and the intake.

double-check your vacuum connections. if one is off, it will cause the problems you describe
