Crankshaft Position Sensor on 2000 996

Who can tell me about the crankshaft position sensor on my 2000 996? My car quit running two times while stopped at intersections. The engine just quit running and wouldn't restart, and the car had to be towed both times. Turns out that the sensor was failing according to the shop. It quit on them and was showing no voltage. So I got it replaced. I'd like to know what causes this sensor to fail. My car has only 59,000 miles on it. Should it be failing with this kind of low mileage?

Also, while I'm asking about sensors. What about the rpm sensor? How long should that last before it fails and what will cause IT to fail? What happens if IT fails?

The crankshaft sensor is the one used by the computer to determine timing and sends a pulse to the RPM gauge. The sensor is 11 years old, they don't last forever in the heat/cooling cycles on the engine. Was the car hot when it failed on you? If so, once it cooled down, it probably would have started to work again.

The car had only gone about 6 miles when it quit both times. While waiting for the tow the second time, it did start up after sitting for about 20 minutes, but then died again after idling for about 5 minutes.

Then it was heat related. The new sensor may last 100,000 miles or 10 miles. My 944S DME relay failed after 177K miles.
