What happens when you try to put it in reverse? Does it go into position, but the car won't back up? Or, does the shifter refuse to go into the reverse gear selection "slot"?? How is 1st gear? Is that easy to find? I am thinking that maybe something damaged one of the bushings that connects the shifter to one of the selection arms coming out of the transmission? Maybe now there's a lot of play and why it won't "find" reverse?? There are two connections under there iirc.

996 reverse

I opened up the console and it all looked OK then I raised the rear-end and found one cable had 'slipped out' just a little so I pushed it back in and put a zip tie on it and it seems ok now. Thanks for you reply
