Brake fluid change -- Really need PT to disable ABS?
 

Hi all,
I'm looking to do the very first brake fluid change on my 997.1S
After reading the tech article and then did some research, i'm kind of hesitant to move forward because, I am not sure whether the PT(Porsche Tester module??) is needed to disable ABS.

Apparently many I've read on forums said they simply go ahead and do the flush and did not see any issue. I'd rather attempt to do it right and cheap, of course.

Any advice?

As long as there is on air in the ABS/PSM system, you do not need to activate (rather than disable) the system to flush the brakes. For future reference, the Durametric system will also activate the ABS if needed.

Thanks JFP. The way I understand this is that, as long as the ABS naturally opens up the valves then it is possible to flush the brake fluids. Is this what you imply?

No. The ABS/PSM control network consists of a pump, valves, and passageways that need to be cycled open and closed during the flushing cycle to assure air trapped inside will be removed. But if there is no air trapped in the system, nothing needs to be activated, just flush the system. Most dealers do not activate the system unless they suspect air has gotten into the control network.
