996/911 Forums

Are most of the people who have a 'water pumper' Porsche posting on the 911 forum or are there just a very few of us that show up here?

Are most people [specially those of us with a [gasp!] 996] too embarrassed to admit we have a Porsche water pumper? I realize there are the extreme purists who believe a true Porsche is cooled only by air and oil.

Having owned an air cooled 911, I actually like my 996 more and for a host of reasons.
Yes, I was bitten by the IMS bearing problem and if I didn't have the money to have it fixed, I would probably curse Porsche for putting a sealed bearing into an engine.

So what gives? Are there just so few of us? Or are water pumper owners going to the 911 forum? Are our cars so well made that we don't need the help available in forums? My 2002 C4 is 13 years old. A person would think things would be giving out by now.....

Thanks!
Taco Truck

Pelican is best known for it's air cooled tech forum and parts catalog. The water cooled side of the house has grown but most people tend to head over to Rennlist which has pretty active 996/997 forums.

We really do need to get more people posting here - so post away...

Taco Truck: I'm new to the Porsche world since last June. Unfamiliar with where everybody posts on air vs. water 911's as only air cooled I've ever owned was a 1964 40hp VW! Joined this forum last year after I purchased my 2005 996 C4S. I have noticed a slow down of posts here since winter set in. My guess is many are sitting in garages with trickle chargers on them, as is mine. I have learned many things from the folks who frequent this forum as well as the Rennlist forum(as per KNS above). I'm guessing spring in the frozen north will bring much more activity to this forum.

Rennlist is one of the more active forums for water-cooled Porsche. It is like a reversal of Pelican not as many air-cooled.

renntech.org is another active water-cooled forum and well worth joining for the TSBs and excellent tech help.

It might help to know what part of the country you are in if you don't plan to crate the engine and ship it off somewhere.

Porsche cooling the heads on their race cars has been going on for many years. The 80's.
It make perfect sense to run a coolant through the cylinder walls.
The race car's iginiton point is earlier
People like me that don't track but drive a water cooled 911, have no issues passing
the strick smog requirements.
I always wanted a 911 but after owning air cooled Bugs (nothing wrong here), I passed for many years on air cooled SC's, etc. Air cooled in Sacramento was scary. Maybe not in Germany with a cooler climate.

My 99 Carrera is all I have ever wanted.
300 hp, 3000lbs. 10:1. Not mid engine. Rear engine. It is a Lear Jet with all the other
cool cars on the road screaming along as Piper Cubs.
Now... let's freak out with the bearing glitch.
1999's... 3 percent. WhY? Don't know. Single bearing vs duel?
When this 1999 Carrera 6sp coupe hits 160,000.... at 91k today.
I will sell it for 10K and put it towards a 2001 Turbo with 50k. Your life can end tonight..
don't worry... get what you desire and drive the heck out of it.

After a few weeks on Rennlist, I thought I might check back in here at Pelican.
Much more activity at Rennlist on the 996 forum.
Decent group of guys, too. Not too much crap throwing, not that there is here, just saying....
Enjoy those water pumpers!
