03 996 Engine Cost

Out of curiosity what's the going rate to get an engine to replace a IMS failed one on a 03 996 these days? Does jake raby take exchanges?

It depends. Is your motor toast or can it be rebuilt? Finding a used replacement might be a challenge also.

Jake has a great reputation but there are other excellent shops out there rebuilding your motor. Give Vision Motorsports or UFO Porsche a call.

Depends upon where you source it; out of a wreck, less than $10K (depending upon engine model), factory reman (short block only), around $12-15K (again depending upon engine configuration).

Jake was taking blown engine's as cores against one of his engines at one time, you would need to speak to his shop for details.

Thanks for the input... i saw a clean 03 online with 100k miles for 11,000 (not running) and started to think about the numbers. It sounds like it would be 20k + with the car purchase to get a rebuild in there not worth i think.

Is Vision the big m96 rebuilder in Socal?

As a "roller", that car is simply not worth $11K, when you can find running cabriolets of the same vintage for $15-17K on fleabay.

JFP -

Which year of 996 would you recommend? Is IMS an must-do in your opinion!

PS - Your posts are awesome!...i've learned a lot already. I'd love to get a 996 but i'm scared of getting burned. A friend of mine had an early 997 that self destructed (IMS) with 24k miles so i'm a bit weary to jump in.

Any year up to 2004; once you get into 2005, many of the cars have the non serviceable IMS, so they cannot easily be updated, and there is no way to know which IMS is in the car without taking it apart. 2006 on until the 9A1 engine was introduced all have the oversized non serviceable IMS.

In my opinion, not updating the IMS is taking a very large but completely avoidable risk.
