'06 997 c4s fluctuating oil level on dash gage

hey guys...car has the 3.8L engine...the dash gage fluctuates as to what the level of oil is in the engine...a few q's please:
1. what is the amt of oil w/ filter for this car...? 9.5 qts...?
2. the gage has been at one time telling me the oil level is low, ie blinking low oil level...so I add 1/2 a qt and then the level says it is half full...this does not sound like the gage is accurately accounting for the 1/2 qt oil just added, right...?
3. how much oil is represented by 1 bar on the oil level gage...? 4 oz...?

for what it is worth, the car is not leaking oil...no smoke coming out of the tail pipes...and i am now concerned that maybe too much oil may be in the engine so i am going to drain the oil and measure how much i remove, thus the q's above i would greatly appreciate answers to...

thx, bob

Hi Bob,

If I could take a stab at this:

1. I believe for the 997, it should be about 9 quarts, give or take 0.5 quarts. Don't quote me on this. Best to refer to your owner's manual.

2. What is your oil pressure gauge displaying at start up and when the engine is fully warm?

3. I'm not exactly sure how much each bar represents on the oil gauge, but if and when it's full, it should be about 1 quart (or about 1L.)

Hope that helps and someone with more experience can chime in. Let us know what you find. Good luck!

Mike

Sounds like it's working fine. 1 bar on the dash gauge is approx 0.4 liters. So add small amounts like you did, 1/2qt, drive it, and then check it again the next morning after it has sat overnight and see if you're up to full yet. If you're just 1 bar under full then be careful how much you add because you dont want to go over and have to drain some. But if you do, just remove the filter and empty it out.

ok here is what I found...I drained 8.5 qts from the sump & oil filter...hummm
a few facts obtained:
1. after checking with many, many sources, the correct amt of oil is 9qts +/- 0.5 qt... again this is a gen 1, 997, c4s, 3.8L engine...
2. each gradation on the dash gage is 400ml = a tad less than 1/2 a qt...

so, has any one ever replaced the oil level/oil temp sensor before...?? what are the steps and what has to be removed to replace it...I believe it is located on the rt side(passenger side) btwn the starter and th eair pump per pelican wayne...but i cannot see it...so...does the intake have to come off which means the eng has to be dropped...??

as always, any & all input welcome...
thx, bob
