Rock chips
I'm looking for a little advice on touching up rock chips on my 996. I'm less worried about the cosmetics--hey, they add character right?--but don't want to invite any rust. So, I'm mainly looking for advice on how to keep any rock chips from rusting or becoming a bigger issue.
I have some touch up paint in the mail right now and was planning to cover up any chips that are down to the metal with that. Is this pretty straightforward? I've never used the touch up paint and want to make sure it's something I can do easily enough and have it look decent. One chip that is right below the passenger door and above the aero kit side skirt looks like it has the beginning of some rust. Should I do something before applying touch up paint here? I've included pictures of this chip along with a few others. For what it's worth, I live in California where it's sunny and dry most of the time, and the car is usually parked under a car cover outdoors. Cheers and happy Sunday! ![]() ![]() ![]()

if the chip goes to bare metal then it will/is rusting.
If this is the case then the only real fix is to repaint. You may have temp luck with one of the touch up kits, but without sealing the metal with a rust inhibitor, it will just come back |
