I have an annoying oil leak on the passenger side head, secondary oil pump on my 2001 996. I was wondering if I need any special tools or special requirements for removing it and installing a new o-ring. Hopefully that resolves the leak. I have a subscription to ALLDATADIY, but it makes no mention of removing or installing such pump. Only the main oil pump. Could you please let me know if this is an easy fix or is there a timing issue I should be concerned about. Thanks.

Take a look at auto atlanta for an exploded view of the area. I believe the only real issue is if you remove both of them and the don't put them back on the correct side of the engine.

1st spin engine CLOCKWISE only to TDC as indicated by the mark @ 10:00 above the crank pulley. Lock it at TDC with a 5/16 allen key to prevent cam timing movement. Remove the oil pump with 10mm socket AFTER noting the direction the arrow is pointing for cylinder bank involved. Pull pump straight out of the head, replace oil ring & reinstall in exact same position as before, insuring arrow/pointer is pointing the same way. The head scavenge pumps are interchangeable just oriented opposite from the other bank.

I've found that on a few of these the leak was actually coming through the threads on one of the Bolts which held it to the head. Make sure that when you do the o-ring you put a little Loctite 574, or Drei bond on the threads of the bolts. You might be able to tell which bolt it is if you check the threads of the bolt while you unscrew it. The wettest threads will signal the culprit. Oh, and also make sure to clean the bolt holes until they're nice dry, and clean so the sealant can work it's magic!
