I have a 1999 996 2wd with tiptronic. When turning right at just about any speed or acceleration I am getting a repeating deep grinding sound in the left rear area of the car. Not a clunking sound but more like a bad wheel bearing that only grinds with lateral force on it. Going straight is no problem and turning left no problem, no clunking under any conditions. Been to two shops that specialize in Porsche, both can get the noise to happen, one can't find anything and says to wait for failure and the other says the rear left axle is bad. Any thoughts?

My over the net diagnostic guess would be wheel bearing, OR differential fluid.

Hi, sounds like your transmission mount is worn out & collapsed allowing metal to metal contact.
I've seen quite a few of these, not that easy to spot while doing a general underside check.
You need to pull back the rubber buffer pads either side of the mounting and point a torch in there.
